McDonald's Drive-Thru Warning: Customers Risk £200 Fine for Phone Use
McDonald's Drive-Thru Warning: £200 Fine Possible for Phone Use

McDonald's customers have been warned that using their mobile phones at the drive-thru could result in a £200 fine and six penalty points on their driving licence. The warning comes after a 2022 regulation that prohibits drivers from using handheld phones while stationary in traffic, such as at traffic lights or in queues.

Drive-Thru Phone Use: What the Law Says

Under the updated law, motorists are only exempt if they are making an emergency call or paying for food at a drive-thru using their device. However, McDonald's advises customers to build their order before leaving home or have a passenger place it. If travelling alone, drivers should pull over safely, stop the engine, and then use the app.

On its website, McDonald's states: "You must ensure that you obey all UK driving laws when using the McDonald's app. As you're not allowed to use your phone whilst driving, you should build your order before you leave for the restaurant, or have a passenger place the order to collect when you arrive." The company adds that drive-thru customers can simply mention their app order at the order post: "Give us your name and we'll do the rest."

Expert Warning on Distractions

Keith Hawes, director of Nationwide Vehicle Contracts, emphasised the importance of the legislation: "The changes to mobile phone driving laws are vital to improving the safety of Britain's roads. Drivers must take these rules seriously to help reduce the number of tragic deaths caused by violations." He also cautioned against other distractions, such as infotainment touchscreens, which can lead to prosecution if they cause a driver to lose control of their vehicle.

Hawes added: "Touchscreens have become a common addition to modern vehicles, and the more complex they become, the more distracting they can be. If you are found to be not properly in control of your vehicle as a result of using dashboard gadgets or hands-free devices you could still be prosecuted."
