A man ran out of his bedroom naked and hysterical when police raided his Birmingham home, leading to the discovery of a carer's body in the kitchen. The incident occurred in Winson Green last year, following a worried call from a colleague of the victim.
The Discovery
Irene Mbugua, a 46-year-old mother of four, had been providing care for David Walsh at his home on Markby Road through the agency Avida Supported Living. She was due to stay with him for two weeks until June 24, 2024. However, she stopped responding to messages on June 21 and failed to clock in for work. When a colleague could not reach her, police were alerted and forced entry into the property.
Upon entering, officers encountered David Walsh, 35, who emerged from the bedroom naked and in a hysterical state. He then spat at, bit, and assaulted the officers, who had to use PAVA spray to subdue him and transport him to a police station.
The Scene
During a subsequent search of the home, officers discovered Ms Mbugua's body in the kitchen. The kitchen door had been blocked by a sofa, and her body was partially covered by debris from a collapsing ceiling caused by a flooded bathroom upstairs. Tragically, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ms Mbugua had last been heard from just after 6.10pm on June 21, when she sent a message about Walsh washing up in the bathroom due to a broken kitchen tap. CCTV footage captured screams coming from the address around 6.30pm that evening.
Background of the Offender
David Walsh had lived alone since 2024 but required constant supervision due to paranoid schizophrenia, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Asperger's syndrome, autism, learning difficulties, and depression. He had stopped taking his medication three months before the killing and ceased engaging with doctors. He also used cocaine.
Legal Outcome
Walsh pleaded guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility and four counts of assaulting an emergency worker. At Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday, May 21, he was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 12 years, minus the 326 days he had already spent on remand.
