The Quayside Hotel in Brixham, a South Devon establishment, has been placed into administration after closing its doors for refurbishment nearly four years ago. The hotel, located on King Street, shut down at the end of 2022 with plans for a major overhaul, including upgrades to the dining area, bedrooms, and other guest facilities. It was expected to reopen in 2025, according to a Facebook post that announced a "new chapter." However, a notice published on the Gazette, the official public record, on Monday, June 8, revealed that TheQuayside Limited, the company behind the hotel, has appointed Richard J Smith & Co from Ivybridge as administrators. The hotel's website is no longer operational.
Administration Details
When a company enters administration, it signifies serious financial distress, and control is transferred to a licensed insolvency practitioner. Their goal is to rescue the business or achieve the best outcome for creditors. In this case, Jonathan David Trembath and Samuel Adam Bailey of Richard J Smith & Co have been named joint administrators for the Quayside Hotel.
Planning Applications and Previous Updates
Last year, Brian Gill, director of TheQuayside Limited, submitted a planning application for internal alterations, which was approved on February 18. The approved work included modifications to partitions, wall and ceiling coverings, as well as the removal and replacement of stairs, installation of a fire-protected stairwell, and construction of a lift shaft at the rear. Changes to signs, windows, and exterior redecoration were also permitted. Additionally, a retrospective application to remove upper-floor rear conservatories received approval.
This planning success came three months after a Facebook statement in which the hotel said: "It's been a while, but we've got some exciting news... A new chapter is beginning for the Quayside Hotel! The refurbishment project is well underway, and we are working hard on renovating from top to bottom. Stay tuned for sneak peeks, updates and an official reopening date as we get closer and closer to welcoming you all back to the Quayside. We can’t wait to see you again at the all-new Quayside Hotel in 2025!" However, no further updates were provided.
