Birmingham drivers are being warned about new reduced speed limits across large parts of the city. Council officials have cut speed limits from 40mph to 30mph on several main routes in a bid to reduce crashes and improve safety. This change means motorists must adapt to new speed rules on roads they may know well.
New 30mph Zones on Major Roads
Most main arteries around the city are now 30mph zones. This includes parts of the A34 Walsall Road, A38 Bristol Road South, and A456 Hagley Road West, among many others. The move is part of a major safety drive that also includes new speed cameras and a ban on pavement parking.
Risk of Fines for Speeding
Motorists now risk penalties for driving as fast as 31mph on roads they are used to being 40mph. Police may let drivers off if they are only slightly over the limit, but this is never guaranteed. It is likely that police will step up speeding operations along some of these routes to enforce compliance.
Council's Statement on Safety
Cllr Majid Mahmood, roads boss at Birmingham City Council, said: "When we declared a road safety emergency, we promised to take action and this is what is happening. Our message here is simple: Slower is Safer. Stick to speed limits and save lives."
The new speed limits are part of a broader initiative to make Birmingham's roads safer for all users. Drivers are urged to pay attention to updated signage and adjust their driving habits accordingly.
