Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks (HKSTP) has unveiled a strategic initiative at VivaTech 2026 to establish a direct innovation gateway between Asia and Europe. The announcement was made at the major European tech conference in Paris, marking a significant step in fostering international technology partnerships.
Gateway Details and Objectives
The new program, dubbed the 'Asia-Europe Innovation Gateway,' aims to facilitate collaboration between startups, researchers, and investors from both regions. HKSTP plans to leverage its network of over 1,300 technology companies and 13,000 research professionals to create a seamless channel for knowledge exchange and market access.
According to HKSTP CEO Albert Wong, the initiative is designed to address the growing demand for cross-continental tech cooperation. 'We are building a bridge that will allow European innovators to tap into Asia's dynamic markets, while Asian startups can benefit from Europe's deep tech expertise,' Wong said during the launch.
Key Features of the Gateway
The gateway will include a dedicated matchmaking platform, joint incubation programs, and regular innovation summits. HKSTP has already secured partnerships with several European tech hubs, including Station F in Paris and The Factory in Berlin, to host exchange programs for up to 100 startups annually.
Additionally, the initiative will offer funding support through a co-investment fund of HK$500 million (approximately €60 million), focusing on areas such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and smart city technologies.
Impact on Global Innovation
Industry experts view this move as a strategic response to the increasing fragmentation of global tech ecosystems. 'By creating a direct corridor between two major innovation regions, HKSTP is helping to counteract the trend toward isolationism,' said Dr. Marie Leclerc, a professor of innovation policy at Sciences Po Paris.
The initiative is expected to generate an estimated 2,000 new jobs across both regions within three years, with a projected economic impact of over €1 billion.
VivaTech 2026 Context
VivaTech 2026, held from May 24-27 at the Porte de Versailles exhibition center, attracted over 150,000 visitors and 12,000 startups from 150 countries. HKSTP's presence at the event included a pavilion showcasing 20 Hong Kong-based tech companies, highlighting innovations in fintech, health tech, and green technology.
The Asia-Europe Innovation Gateway is set to launch its pilot phase in September 2026, with full operations expected by early 2027.
