Bergvall wants Spurs exit amid Villa interest

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall is seeking a summer move away from the club, with Aston Villa among the sides monitoring his situation. The Sweden international has grown frustrated with limited first-team opportunities under manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Villa's January interest and Bergvall's game time

Aston Villa expressed interest in Bergvall back in January, having noted his lack of minutes during the first half of the season. The 20-year-old then missed several weeks through injury, further stalling his development. He has started just 11 Premier League matches in each of the last two campaigns, a statistic that has prompted him to seek a more prominent role elsewhere.

Despite his youth, Bergvall feels ready to take on greater responsibility within a team. However, under De Zerbi, that opportunity appears unlikely. Spurs are pushing to sign both Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United and Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, a double deal that would cost close to £200 million. Adding both players would intensify competition for places, further limiting Bergvall's chances.

Villa's midfield options and potential obstacles

Aston Villa are not short of midfield options. Youri Tielemans and Ross Barkley are available to play alongside Amadou Onana or Boubacar Kamara. John McGinn can also drop into a deeper role, while Tielemans could move into a number 10 position, allowing Kamara to partner Onana. Kamara suffered a knee injury early in Villa's FA Cup third-round clash against Tottenham in January and hopes to return for the start of pre-season. Onana is also likely to miss games next season due to injury concerns.

Lamare Bogarde is another option for Unai Emery in midfield. While he offers a different profile to Bergvall, Villa would likely need to make room in the squad if they were to pursue a move. In theory, selling Morgan Rogers could create that opportunity, but that would depend on the type of player Emery intends to bring in as a replacement for the England international should he depart.
