Douglas Ure Appointed as New Chief Executive of Business West
New Chief Executive for Business West Chamber

The prominent South West chamber of commerce, Business West, has announced a significant leadership change with the appointment of a new chief executive.

A New Leader for the South West

Douglas Ure is set to take the helm at Business West in January next year. He will be succeeding the organisation's managing director, Phil Smith, who will be retiring in the spring after an impressive tenure spanning more than three decades.

Mr Ure joins the chamber from Marsh McLennan, a major global professional services firm, where he built a considerable career. His experience includes holding various leadership roles both in the UK and Asia, where he was responsible for leading teams and developing strategic partnerships that bridged the private and public sectors. His expertise also covers advising clients on complex areas such as risk management, corporate strategy, and business transformation.

Ensuring a Smooth Handover

To guarantee a seamless transition, it is understood that Mr Ure will work closely with the outgoing Mr Smith. This collaboration is designed to ensure continuity and set the stage for a successful handover of responsibilities.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Douglas Ure stated: “I am excited to lead Business West. I see this role as an opportunity to bring my skills, passion and experience to help South West businesses and the region to prosper. I will put all my energy into helping Business West thrive and build on its successful foundations.”

His primary responsibility will be to guide the organisation through its next phase of growth and strategic transformation.

Building on a Strong Legacy

Colin Skellett, the chair of Business West, commented on the appointment, saying: “We were extremely impressed with Douglas’s commercial expertise, which includes his track record of driving transformation, attracting and retaining talent, and forging strategic partnerships. His experience and vision will help Business West grow and evolve, while staying true to its commitment to driving prosperity for businesses and our region.”

He also extended his gratitude to the departing leader: “We thank Phil again, for his outstanding contribution over three decades, shaping Business West into the trusted business leadership and support organisation it is today and for continuing to provide his support through the handover and transition.”

This leadership announcement follows the recent addition of three new non-executive directors to Business West's board, signalling a period of refreshment for the organisation.

Reflecting on his long career with the chamber, Phil Smith added: “Leading Business West for more than 30 years has been the highlight of a varied career from oil rigs to the City. Business West has offered a unique combination of commercial enterprise, public service and opportunities to make a difference to a place I love. I will be a keen observer of where Douglas can take it next.”

Under Mr Smith's leadership, Business West has consistently focused on driving long-term prosperity for its members and the wider South West region. The organisation remains one of the largest chamber networks in the UK, serving businesses across Bath, Bristol, Wiltshire, and Gloucestershire.
