Slingsby Gin Maker Enters Administration in Harrogate

Historic Harrogate Gin Producer Enters Administration

In a significant blow to the UK's spirits industry and the historic spa town of Harrogate, Spirit of Harrogate Limited, the company responsible for the much-loved Slingsby Gin brand, has collapsed into administration. The firm, which operates from Montpellier Parade in Harrogate, has formally entered administration after struggling with what it describes as punishing trading conditions that have affected many businesses in the sector.

Insolvency Experts Called In

The company has appointed Lewis Business Recovery & Insolvency to handle the administration process. In a statement, Gareth Lewis, the proposed administrator, explained the circumstances leading to this development. "Unfortunately the business has, like many in its sector, struggled with rising costs and difficult trading conditions in recent years," Mr Lewis stated. He went on to describe Spirit of Harrogate as one of Harrogate's "iconic independent retailers" and praised the Slingsby Gin product range as being very well respected both locally and nationally.

Efforts to Preserve the Business

Administrators are now actively marketing the business and its assets for sale as a going concern. The primary objectives of this process are:

  • To preserve existing jobs where possible
  • To maximise returns for creditors
  • To maintain the business as a viable operation

Mr Lewis confirmed that any interested parties should contact his colleague Olivia Oates directly to discuss potential acquisition opportunities.

Company Background and Impact

Founded in 2014 by Harrogate entrepreneurs Marcus Black and Mike Carthy, Spirit of Harrogate has built a strong reputation through its Slingsby Gin products. The company employs five people and has established itself as a respected name in both local and national markets. The administration comes at a challenging time for the hospitality sector, with many independent retailers and hospitality firms reporting difficulties staying afloat.

Broader Industry Context

The collapse of Spirit of Harrogate occurs against a backdrop of wider challenges facing the hospitality and retail sectors. Recent budget reforms have left many businesses facing steep rises in business rates – the taxes paid by firms to local authorities. This development follows Chancellor Rachel Reeves' recent announcement that only pubs would receive specific help to cope with the surge in business rate bills, leaving other hospitality operators and independent retailers to navigate these challenging conditions without similar support.

The administration of this well-regarded gin producer highlights the ongoing pressures facing small and medium-sized businesses in the current economic climate, particularly those operating in the competitive spirits and hospitality markets.
