West Midlands Home to UK's Top Growth Hotspots

New research has identified the West Midlands as home to two of the United Kingdom's most dynamic business growth hotspots, with Telford and Wrekin and Solihull leading regional economic momentum through their scaling enterprises.

National Rankings Highlight Regional Strength

According to the latest Growth Outlook 26 report from Growth Flag, which assessed over 4.3 million UK businesses, Telford and Wrekin has secured an impressive third place nationally among locations with high-growth potential. The analysis reveals that 14 percent of businesses in this area are predicted to achieve significant growth of 20 percent or more during 2026.

Solihull has also earned a prestigious position within the UK's top ten growth hotspots, with 10 percent of local firms demonstrating substantial expansion potential for the coming year. These findings emerge against a challenging national backdrop where only nine percent of businesses across the country are expected to achieve similar growth rates, representing a concerning 16 percent year-on-year decline.

Telford's Industrial Powerhouse

Telford and Wrekin benefits from one of the strongest industrial foundations in the country, supported by employers spanning multiple strategic sectors. The area's economic resilience is bolstered by advanced manufacturing, engineering, agricultural technology, and supply chain industries that provide stability and innovation potential.

Well-known operators including Magna Cosma, Müller, and Capgemini have established significant presences in the region, contributing to its reputation as a centre for industrial excellence and commercial opportunity.

Solihull's Diverse Business Ecosystem

Solihull's business community showcases remarkable diversity, featuring globally recognised corporations alongside emerging enterprises in cutting-edge sectors. The borough is home to automotive giant Jaguar Land Rover and fitness apparel phenomenon Gymshark, alongside numerous scaling firms specialising in clean technology, digital services, professional services, and automotive innovation.

This varied business landscape creates a fertile environment for cross-sector collaboration and knowledge exchange, supporting sustained economic development across the region.

Navigating Economic Challenges

Growth Flag's comprehensive analysis notes that businesses across the country are operating under increased financial pressure, with the report identifying 47,600 high-potential companies showing early distress signals. Nationwide, more than 726,000 firms exhibit signs of economic strain, while new business registrations have fallen by six percent, indicating growing caution among entrepreneurs entering the market.

Despite these challenges, the West Midlands' strategic sector mix and concentration of internationally competitive firms position the region strongly to navigate economic volatility and build long-term resilience.

Local Leadership Responds

Councillor Heather Delaney, cabinet member for economy, business and skills at Solihull Council, welcomed the borough's performance, stating: "Solihull's recognition as one of the UK's top ten areas for business growth potential reflects the strength of our business community, the ambition of our people, and the strategic investments we're making to unlock opportunity."

"Our position is a testament to the confidence investors and entrepreneurs place in Solihull as a place to innovate, grow and succeed," she added, highlighting the council's commitment to fostering a supportive business environment.

Expert Analysis and Future Prospects

Richard Jeffery, co-founder of Growth Flag, commented: "The West Midlands is home to some of the most exciting commercial stories in the UK and this year's data reinforces the region's potential to lead the next phase of business growth."

"Places like Telford and Solihull show what happens when the right support and regional sector ecosystems come together to help ambitious firms realise their potential," he continued, emphasising the importance of targeted investment and strategic support.

Jeffery concluded with an optimistic outlook: "There is clearly significant opportunity across the region. With continued focus and targeted investment, the West Midlands can grow the number of scaling businesses, drive innovation and create prosperity in every community."

The report's findings suggest that while national economic conditions present challenges, specific regions like the West Midlands demonstrate remarkable resilience and growth potential through their strategic sector strengths and supportive business ecosystems.
