A significant cultural shift is underway in the British workplace, with a landmark total of 253 companies now officially operating a four-day working week while maintaining full employee pay. This represents a substantial 27% increase from the previous year, following the addition of 53 new firms to the accredited list in 2024.
A Growing Movement for Shorter Working Weeks
The 4 Day Week Foundation, the organisation behind the accreditation scheme, reports that this policy now benefits more than 6,000 workers across the United Kingdom. The movement spans a remarkably diverse range of sectors, demonstrating its applicability far beyond any single industry.
Joe Ryle, Campaign Director for the 4 Day Week Foundation, stated: "These companies are proving that there is nothing stopping organisations in the UK from moving to a four-day week. Across virtually every sector and region, employers are showing that shorter working weeks boost productivity, improve wellbeing and help attract and retain talent – all without cutting pay."
Evidence of Success Across Industries
Ryle emphasised that the debate has moved on from questioning the viability of the model. "The question is no longer whether it works, but how quickly others will follow," he added. The comprehensive list of accredited employers includes businesses from finance and banking, such as Atom Bank, to creative agencies, manufacturing firms, charities, and technology startups.
The model appears to be delivering on its promises, with participating companies reporting tangible benefits. These include enhanced staff morale, reduced burnout, and often, counterintuitively, maintained or even increased levels of output and service quality.

The Future of Work in Britain
This expanding roster signals a potential permanent change in the UK's employment landscape. The model challenges traditional notions of productivity being tied directly to hours spent at a desk, instead focusing on output and employee welfare. As more companies report positive outcomes from the trial, pressure may grow on other businesses and policymakers to consider how flexible working arrangements can be integrated into the modern economy.
The diversity of the list—from small creative studios to established financial institutions—suggests that the four-day week is not a niche policy but a viable option for a broad spectrum of the UK business community.
