Automotive Supplier Adient Announces Closure of Black Country Manufacturing Plant
Automotive seating manufacturer Adient has confirmed the closure of its manufacturing facility in Wednesbury, located in the Black Country region of the West Midlands. This decision will result in the loss of 86 jobs, impacting dozens of workers in the area.
Consultation Process and Reasons for Closure
The company has been engaged in a collective consultation with trade union representatives and employees since February, following persistent structural and market challenges. Adient stated that production volumes have significantly declined since 2019, with no expectation of returning to pre-pandemic levels, while competitive pressures continue to intensify.
According to Adient, the Wednesbury plant, which produces foam products for automotive clients, has faced falling business volumes and structurally elevated operating costs over a prolonged period. These factors have negatively affected the site's economic performance, making the operation unsustainable in the long term.
Company Statement and Support for Employees
A spokesperson for Adient explained, "Throughout the consultation process, Adient carefully evaluated alternative options, both internally and together with employee representatives. Despite these efforts, the structural and market pressures affecting the site ultimately proved beyond the scope of feasible and sustainable solutions."
The company emphasized that the closure decision is not related to the performance or commitment of the Wednesbury workforce, who have demonstrated professionalism and dedication during this period of uncertainty. Adient expressed sincere appreciation for their efforts.
As part of broader efforts to optimize its manufacturing network, Adient plans to cease operations at the Wednesbury facility by autumn this year, with 86 employee work contracts expected to be terminated. The company is committed to supporting affected employees through the transition, working closely with employee representatives and local authorities to provide enhanced severance arrangements and appropriate support measures in line with local regulations.
Broader Industry Context
This closure reflects the ongoing significant transformation within the global automotive industry, which continues to experience difficult market conditions. The West Midlands, a key hub for automotive manufacturing, faces ongoing pressures as companies adapt to these evolving challenges.
