DWP to Give Extra £45 to State Pensioners Born After 1953 in May
DWP Extra £45 for Pensioners Born After 1953 in May

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is distributing an additional £45 in May to state pensioners born after 1953. This follows the Triple Lock increase implemented in April, which raised the full new State Pension to £241.30 per week, up from the previous £230.25. Over a four-week pay period, this amounts to an extra £45.

The 4.8% uplift took effect from April 6. Labour Party Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden commented: "I know global shocks, and the effects they have on our living costs, will be increasing anxiety for many households. This Government will always protect our pensioners, and that's why we are raising the full rate of new State Pension by up to £575 this coming year."

Eligibility and Political Debate

The new state pension applies to all claimants born after 1953. However, a Labour Party backbencher, Graeme Downie, has called for reforming the pension triple lock to help fund increased defence spending. Downie, elected as Labour MP for Dunfermline and Dollar in 2024, wrote in The House that the government should be brave enough to ask older people who "benefited financially from peace" to contribute more to future national security.

"If there is to be a true whole of society approach to defence, and younger people could be expected to die, what are older people willing to sacrifice?" he wrote. "If 'tough' choices are needed, then we must not duck from the most difficult. We must be brave enough to ask those who benefited financially from peace to contribute to the future security of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren."

Downie argued that "history teaches us that armies don't win wars, economies do, and poverty harms our economy by reducing the numbers for a capable workforce as well as fighting soldiers." He concluded: "If that means reforming, not abolishing, sacred cows such as the pensions triple lock while still protecting pensioners living in poverty, or accessing wealth built up in housing or other assets accumulated during these years of peace, then surely that is a sacrifice worth it for our future freedom?"
