A wave of influencers on social media platforms like Instagram are sharing advice for families on Universal Credit or other benefits, teaching them how to cash in on 'freebie' Britain. Known as 'skint' mums and dads, these influencers are helping Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefit claimants gain access to top attractions at discounted prices.
Influencers Leading the Way
One influencer, who goes by the moniker Skint Dad, aims to help 'normal families feel less pressure about money', according to The Telegraph. Vyki Sparkes, author of Museum Mum, an advice website for family days out, tells readers that there are 'more than 80 places like museums, theme parks, zoos, theatres and cinemas where you can get in for cheap or even for free if you’re on Universal Credit'.
Practical Advice for Families
Skint Dad notes that 'having a day out with the family can be a major expense' but those claiming Universal Credit or other benefits 'can get access to cheaper days out with special tickets'. He encourages readers to 'get cheaper, discounted tickets for days out' when 'you claim certain benefits'.
Another Instagram influencer, Ask Ellie, boasts more than 90,000 followers and posts content about parenting, benefits, disabilities, and mental health. Ask Ellie promotes discounts in a post, stating 'half term doesn’t have to cost a fortune'. The account’s author, Oliver, told The Telegraph: 'I think it’s important to recognise that these kinds of discounts are not about giving people an advantage but about improving access for families who would otherwise be excluded. For many families on Universal Credit, particularly those supporting children with additional needs, the cost of everyday life is already significantly higher.'
The trend highlights how influencers are using their platforms to help families navigate the benefits system and access affordable leisure activities, sparking debate about the role of such advice in supporting low-income households.
