IKEA UK Rolls Out New £13.45 Wage Standards Nationwide

IKEA has officially announced a significant wage increase across all its United Kingdom locations, committing to pay staff members the voluntary Real Living Wage of £13.45 per hour. This new policy represents a major enhancement for the retailer's workforce and aligns with accreditation from the Living Wage Foundation.

Exceeding Government Minimum Standards

The newly implemented £13.45 hourly rate surpasses the current National Living Wage mandated by the Labour Party government, which stands at £12.71 for workers aged 21 and over across the UK. By adopting the voluntary Real Living Wage, IKEA joins a growing movement of employers who base compensation on independently calculated living costs rather than statutory minimums.

Katherine Chapman, Executive Director of the Living Wage Foundation, commented on the development: "The rise to the minimum wage is a welcome boost for low-paid workers who have been hit hardest by years of high prices. It still falls short of the voluntary real Living Wage, the only UK wage rate independently calculated based on the cost of living, currently £13.45 across the UK and £14.80 in London."

Chapman further noted: "Despite tough times for businesses over the last year, we are still seeing more employers join the movement of over 16,000 Living Wage Employers who are committed to paying their workers in line with the cost of living. That's because they know the Living Wage is good for people, good for society and good for business."

Easter Holiday Store Closures Announced

The wage announcement coincides with IKEA's confirmation of Easter holiday operating hours. The retailer has disclosed that 20 of its 22 UK branches will be closed on Easter Sunday, April 5th. This includes the store located near Birmingham in Wednesbury.

IKEA provided clarification regarding their holiday schedule: "Over the Easter bank holiday all our stores will be open on Good Friday (April 3), Saturday (April 4) and Easter Monday (April 6). All stores, with the exception of Scotland, will be closed on Easter Sunday."

The company advised customers to check local store pages for precise opening hours during the holiday period, as individual locations may have variations. Full details are available on IKEA's official website.

This dual announcement regarding wage improvements and holiday closures comes during a period when many retailers are balancing operational considerations with workforce investments. IKEA's commitment to the Real Living Wage places them among prominent UK employers who have chosen to exceed government-mandated compensation levels.
