Primark Rolls Out New £13 Minimum Hourly Wage Across All UK Stores
Primark has officially implemented a significant pay increase for its retail staff across the United Kingdom, establishing a new minimum hourly wage of £13 for all retail assistants in England, Scotland, and Wales. In London, where living costs are higher, the rate has been set at £13.71 per hour. This change is now in effect at all Primark locations, including branches in Birmingham and other major cities.
Enhanced Compensation and Employee Benefits
Beyond the hourly wage adjustments, Primark has confirmed that employees will continue to receive a comprehensive benefits package. This includes a year-round 15% discount on purchases, which provides substantial savings for staff members. The company emphasizes that these measures are designed to support workers in an increasingly demanding retail environment.
Kari Rodgers, UK Retail Director at Primark, commented on the initiative, stating, "As retail becomes a more demanding environment, our colleagues play an increasingly important role to support our customers and the local communities we’re part of up and down the country." She added, "By investing in increasing colleague pay, we hope this goes some way towards recognising their hard work, commitment and the value they bring every day."
Context and Recent Campaign Launch
This wage increase follows the recent unveiling of Primark's latest womenswear campaign, titled Shockingly Chic. The campaign aims to highlight the brand's commitment to offering elevated, quality styling at accessible prices. It focuses on the 'double-take moment' when shoppers discover chic fashion items that are surprisingly affordable.
The Spring collection features ten head-to-toe looks, including items made from 100% linen, paper-pleat cocoon trousers, and a standout satin dress, with prices starting from just £12. Mary Lucas, Womenswear Trading Director at Primark, explained, "We’ve always believed everyone deserves to look and feel good without paying more, and with our latest campaign, we’re tapping into that magic moment of seeing such chic fashion at such ‘shockingly’ affordable prices."
Lucas further noted, "We want women to rethink what affordable, great quality fashion can look and feel like. Whether it’s 100% linen tailoring, our statement satin slip dress or refined everyday staples, we want everyone to feel confident, stylish and even shocked by the elevated quality they’ll find in Primark this Spring."
The combination of improved wages for staff and a focus on value-driven fashion underscores Primark's strategy to enhance both employee welfare and customer satisfaction in the competitive retail sector.
