Tesco Announces Major Pay Rise for Over 200,000 Employees Following £200m Investment
More than 200,000 Tesco employees across the United Kingdom are set to receive a significant pay increase at the end of March, thanks to a substantial £200 million investment by the retail giant. This move underscores the company's commitment to rewarding its workforce amid a competitive supermarket landscape.
Details of the Pay Increase
Hourly rates for shop floor and distribution workers will rise to £13.28, representing a notable 5.1% improvement. For staff working within the M25, the London Location Allowance will also see an increase from £1.21 to £1.27 per hour. This adjustment brings the total hourly rate for employees in the capital to an impressive £14.55.
The new figures ensure that Tesco's pay for colleagues in stores and online fulfilment centres remains comfortably above the legal minimum wage requirements for adults over 21. These changes are scheduled to take effect from March 29, 2026, marking a key date for the retailer's payroll.
Competitive Context in the Supermarket Sector
The decision follows similar announcements from several major competitors who have recently updated their pay structures. According to reports, Sainsbury's has moved its national rate to £13.23, while Lidl has introduced an entry-level payment of £13.45 per hour. Notably, Aldi is set to become the highest-paying supermarket when it transitions to £13.50 nationally this April.
Ashwin Prasad, Tesco UK's chief executive, commented on the initiative: "Our colleagues play a vital role in delivering for our customers every single day. I'm pleased we're able to announce this pay deal, which reflects our deep appreciation for everything they do and represents another meaningful investment in colleague pay."

Additional Support Initiatives
In addition to the financial changes, Tesco has confirmed the introduction of a new domestic abuse policy. This initiative will provide up to three days of paid leave for staff members who are affected by such circumstances, offering crucial support during difficult times.
Daniel Adams, national officer for the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW), welcomed the pay rise, stating it "extends the gap between the Tesco rates of pay and the national living wage (£12.21 per hour)." He added, "The union is also particularly pleased that the business has agreed to be the first retailer to commit to providing paid leave to help support staff who experience domestic abuse – something that could make a huge difference for those affected."
This comprehensive package highlights Tesco's efforts to enhance employee welfare and remain competitive in a rapidly evolving retail environment, setting a benchmark for others in the industry.
