Half of Young Drivers Risk Prosecution Over Fake Car Insurance
Young Drivers Risk Prosecution Over Fake Car Insurance

Drivers aged 17 to 25 are at risk of prosecution after purchasing fake car insurance through social media and messaging apps, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has warned. Research suggests that half of young drivers have bought policies via these platforms, many of which are fraudulent. The FCA cautions that this mistake could lead to prosecution, fines, or having their vehicle seized.

Ghost Brokers Targeting Young Drivers

Ghost brokers are increasingly targeting 17 to 25-year-olds with fake car insurance deals online. Amie Donaghey, 21, told BBC News NI she was left with a criminal conviction after being scammed by a ghost broker. When she tried to contact the broker after realizing the scam, he "ghosted" her. "I was blocked on everything," she said.

FCA Warning and Advice

Graeme Reynolds, director of insurance at the FCA, stated: "Tight budgets make cheap offers tempting – and scammers take advantage of that. Don't get ghosted by a policy that doesn't exist. Check the FCA Firm Checker before you buy. Driving uninsured could cost you far more than any premium."

Expert Insights on Ghost Broker Tactics

Greg Wilson, Founder and CEO of Quotezone.co.uk, explained that ghost brokers are becoming increasingly sophisticated. They use professional-looking websites, sophisticated advertising strategies, and seemingly official documents to appear legitimate. Many fraudsters pretend to represent trusted insurers, adding credibility to their fraudulent activity. By offering significantly lower premiums, they attract budget-conscious shoppers, especially young drivers who may not be aware of the risks.

Wilson advised: "Always take care to verify the broker's credentials, be wary of unusually low prices, and if in doubt, contact the insurer directly."
