British Gas offers £2,000 grants to clear winter energy debt
British Gas £2,000 energy debt grants available

British Gas has announced a major initiative to support its customers struggling with energy costs this winter, offering grants of up to £2,000 to clear existing debt.

Financial support for vulnerable households

The supplier's Energy Support Fund is now open for applications from existing British Gas customers who are experiencing energy debt or are at risk of fuel poverty during the colder months. This programme follows a successful run last winter, where it distributed more than £4.2 million in grants to vulnerable households across Great Britain.

To be eligible, customers must have an energy debt between £50 and £2,000 on a pre-payment meter, or between £250 and £2,000 on a credit account.

A long-standing commitment to community support

Chris O’Shea, Chief Executive of Centrica, British Gas's parent company, stated: "As winter approaches, we know that rising household bills are a real worry for many people across the UK. We want our customers to know that we’re here to support them."

He emphasised that tackling energy debt and fuel poverty is a key priority, adding that the company has committed £140 million – the UK's largest voluntary energy support package – to ensure no one faces these challenges alone.

The support is channelled through the British Gas Energy Trust, an independent charity solely funded by British Gas, which has a long history of aiding consumers.

Additional help and advice available

Beyond direct grants, British Gas is providing multiple avenues for support. Throughout the winter, customers can visit British Gas Post Office Pop Ups, where advisors funded by the Trust will be on hand.

These advisors can provide a detailed overview of available support, signpost people to local organisations, check for benefits entitlements, and offer free energy-saving advice. British Gas customers can also receive in-person help with their accounts at these locations.

Furthermore, the Individuals and Families Fund (I&F) offers support of up to £1,700 for customers of any energy supplier who are struggling with debt on a prepayment or credit account.

Last year, the Energy Support Fund provided crucial assistance to almost 6,000 households across England, Scotland, and Wales, offering a lifeline during the most expensive time of the year.
