Car Insurance Soars £158 for Drivers with Penalty Points

Drivers Hit with Significant Car Insurance Increases Over Licence Penalty Points

Motorists across the UK are facing substantial rises in their car insurance costs if they have penalty points on their driving licence. New research indicates that premiums can increase by as much as 26 per cent for drivers with endorsements, adding significant financial pressure to travel expenses.

Research Reveals Steep Premium Hikes

According to data from comparison site Quotezone, drivers with just three penalty points typically pay around 15 per cent more for insurance compared to those with a clean driving record. The situation becomes even more severe for motorists with six points, who face an average premium rise of 26 per cent.

With the average cost of car insurance in the United Kingdom currently standing at £607 annually, this percentage increase translates to an extra £158 per year for affected drivers. Experts warn that these additional costs can persist for years following a driving offence.

Insurance Risk Analysis Explained

Greg Wilson, chief executive of Quotezone, explained the reasoning behind these premium increases. "Even a single minor offence can lead to penalty points that push insurance costs higher potentially for years to come," he stated.

Insurance providers use sophisticated risk analysis to calculate individual premium costs for each driver. This analysis considers multiple factors including age, postcode, vehicle type, and crucially, driving history. "If a driver has penalty points it shows they are at greater risk of having an incident on the road than someone with a clean licence, meaning normally, their premiums will increase," Wilson added.

Birmingham's Road Rage Ranking

In related motoring news, a separate investigation by Saga Car Insurance has identified Birmingham as the second most road rage inducing area for drivers in England, following only Kent. The study analysed comprehensive traffic density and roadwork data to create an interactive map highlighting England's most stressful driving locations.

The insurance experts found that Birmingham drivers contend with particularly challenging conditions, including an average of 3,650 roadworks annually and a traffic density of 1.3 million cars per kilometer of road each year. These factors contribute significantly to driver frustration and stress levels in the region.

National Penalty Point Statistics

The research comes against a backdrop of substantial penalty point issuance across Britain. Last year alone, 4.8 million penalty points were issued to British drivers, indicating widespread driving offences that could be impacting insurance premiums nationwide.

Motorists are advised to maintain clean driving records where possible to avoid these significant insurance cost increases. The combination of penalty points and challenging driving environments like Birmingham's creates a perfect storm for higher motoring expenses across the country.
