Costco Named as UK's 'Always' Cheapest Fuel Retailer, Beating Supermarkets
Costco Named UK's 'Always' Cheapest Fuel Retailer

Costco Declared the UK's Most Affordable Fuel Retailer

Motorists across the United Kingdom have received clear guidance on which retailer consistently provides the cheapest fuel options. According to recent reports, drivers who typically fill up at major supermarkets such as Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, and Asda could achieve significant savings by switching to Costco for their petrol and diesel needs.

Substantial Price Differences Highlighted

Howard Cox, the founder of FairFuelUK, has been vocal about the pricing disparities in the fuel market. He stated, "The major branded fuel supply chain continues to rip off drivers at will, with no Government checks whatsoever, despite promises to end decades of opportunistic profiteering." Cox emphasized that Costco stands out as the most honest and economical choice for purchasing fuel.

He provided specific figures to illustrate the cost advantage: Costco's petrol is 9p per litre cheaper than BP's national average, while diesel is 13p per litre cheaper. Even Asda, known for competitive pricing, averages 5p lower than BP on petrol and 6p lower on diesel, but still cannot match Costco's rates.

Explaining the Pricing Advantage

A key question arises regarding how Costco manages to maintain such low prices when the same six major refineries supply all forecourts across the country. Despite having only 20 outlets compared to BP's extensive network of nearly 1,200 locations, Costco's buying power enables them to deliver superior pricing.

Cox advised drivers, "So my advice to drivers is don't waste time driving around looking for lower prices; head to your nearest supermarket forecourt and boycott BP, Shell, and Esso, which remain the unchecked rip-off suppliers in the UK."

Government Initiatives and Fuel Finder Service

The UK government has introduced the Fuel Finder service, a platform that aggregates live retail fuel prices and forecourt information nationwide. This service assists motor fuel traders in meeting reporting obligations, allows authorized organizations to access and share reliable open data, and enables individuals to report issues observed at forecourts.

Drivers can access this valuable information through participating third-party apps and websites. The government has outlined its future enforcement priorities, stating, "Looking further ahead, once the regime is established, we expect to target enforcement action against the conduct which is most likely to undermine the effectiveness of Fuel Finder, and which is likely to be more harmful to consumers and competition."

Their focus will be on ensuring businesses register with Fuel Finder and provide accurate pricing information, rather than on amenities and facilities, unless significant harm is identified.
