Lloyds Bank to Shut Five UK Branches Next Week Amid Digital Shift
Lloyds Closing Five UK Branches in January 2026

Lloyds Bank is set to close five of its branches across England within days, marking the latest step in a significant reduction of its physical high street presence.

Five Branches to Close in January

The closures are scheduled for the week commencing 19 January 2026. The specific branches and their closing dates are as follows:

  • Lewes - January 19, 2026
  • Swadlincote - January 20, 2026
  • Hedge End - January 21, 2026
  • Penzance - January 21, 2026
  • Petersfield - January 21, 2026

These five closures are part of a much larger strategic move by the Lloyds Banking Group, which includes the Halifax and Bank of Scotland brands.

A Wider Trend of High Street Retreat

This year, the banking giant plans to shut a total of 71 branches across its entire estate. This follows an even larger wave of closures in 2025, during which the group shut down 218 branches according to consumer group Which?.

The primary driver cited for the branch closures is a fundamental change in customer behaviour. A spokesperson for the group highlighted that over 21 million customers now use banking apps to manage their money, leading to a drastic decline in footfall at physical locations.

Lloyds is not alone in this trend. Other major UK banks, including Santander, Barclays, and NatWest, have also announced plans to reduce their branch networks, consistently pointing to the rapid shift towards online banking.

Alternative Banking Options for Customers

For customers affected by the Lloyds Bank branch closures, the group is promoting a range of alternative services. Customers can continue to use any remaining Lloyds, Halifax, or Bank of Scotland branch for their banking needs.

Other key alternatives include:

  • Banking Hubs: These are shared facilities where customers from different banks can withdraw and deposit cash, pay bills, and speak to a banking adviser. As of August 2025, there were 178 banking hubs open across the UK.
  • Post Office: Basic banking services, such as cash withdrawals, balance checks, and depositing cash and cheques, are available at Post Office counters.
  • PayPoint: Customers can deposit cash at over 30,000 PayPoint locations nationwide.

The bank advises customers to check its website under the 'community bankers' section for a current list of hub locations and further support details.
