PayPal Email Scam Alert: Fraudsters Use 1p Trick to Drain Bank Accounts

PayPal users have been issued a critical warning about a sophisticated email scam that uses a deceptive 1p payment trick to potentially drain bank accounts. Scammers are posing as official representatives from PayPal to trick individuals into phone fraud, exploiting the brand's trusted reputation.

How the Scam Operates

According to consumer champion Which?, the scam begins with fraudsters using a non-existent or hacked business on PayPal to send a mere 1p to a victim's PayPal account. This small transaction is accompanied by an email that appears to come from the official PayPal address, service@paypal.com, making it look genuine.

The email typically includes a note stating that the recipient's PayPal account processed a payout by small deposit confirmation. It misleadingly suggests that more money is on the way and that the tiny amount was sent to verify that the account is active. From there, the email instructs recipients to call a provided phone number if they did not authorise the transaction, claiming it will immediately secure your account and request a refund.

The Danger of the Fake Support Call

If victims call the number, they are connected to scammers who impersonate PayPal support staff. These fraudsters then attempt to convince callers to hand over sensitive personal information and bank details, which can be used to drain accounts or commit identity theft.

Which? has confirmed that PayPal is aware of this scam and has stated that the phone numbers used in these emails are not associated with the legitimate company. PayPal emphasises that it does not tolerate fraud and is committed to protecting customers from such phishing attempts.

PayPal's Official Advice for Users

PayPal has issued clear guidelines to help users stay safe:

  • Stay vigilant: Scammers often create a sense of urgency or use fake support numbers to steal information.
  • Never respond to demands for urgent action: PayPal will never demand immediate action or include phone numbers in payment messages.
  • Always log in directly: Use the official PayPal app or website to review account activity, rather than clicking links in emails.
  • Report suspicious emails: Forward any dubious emails to phishing@paypal.com and then delete them.
  • Contact your bank immediately: If you notice an unauthorised transaction or lose money, call your bank using the number on the back of your card.

This scam highlights the importance of cybersecurity awareness in today's digital age. By following these precautions, PayPal users can better protect themselves from financial fraud and maintain the security of their personal data.
