More drivers face losing their licences and being banned from the roads due to tightened safety laws. The DVLA is set to cancel licences and take drivers off the road as part of a new government road safety strategy.
New Drink-Drive Limits Proposed
Motorists may find themselves caught out by new drink-driving laws being proposed by the government. The changes will mean people cannot drink as much alcohol before being legally allowed to get behind the wheel. If motorists are not familiar with the new thresholds, they could easily find themselves in trouble.
Drink-driving could lead to driving bans or even prison sentences in certain circumstances. Experts warn that one pint of beer or a standard glass of wine could put motorists over the reduced limit in some cases. Police advise people not to drink at all if they are planning on driving.
Government Road Safety Strategy
The government intends to cut the drink-drive limit in England and Wales from the current 35 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath down to 22 micrograms. This is part of a broader road safety strategy aimed at reducing deaths and injuries on UK roads.
There is no exact amount of alcohol someone can consume and ensure they stay below the drink-drive limit due to individual factors such as age, weight, and metabolism. Ministers released details of their plans earlier this year alongside other tougher driving measures.
Additional Driving Measures
These include penalty points for seatbelt offences and mandatory eyesight tests for drivers over 70. Officials say these measures will help to bring down the number of deaths and injuries on UK roads.
