Property developer Nacropolis has formally submitted extensive plans to Birmingham City Council to construct a substantial seven-storey hotel featuring 180 rooms on John Bright Street. Revitalizing a Historic Location

The development targets the old Borough Buildings, a three-storey structure with a basement that has stood on John Bright Street since 1909. Originally built as a purpose-built car showroom, the building has seen various uses over the decades, including serving as a carpet warehouse, the iconic Ikon Gallery from 1978 until its relocation, and later as office space. Most recently, it was earmarked for residential use in 2021, but the planning application expired before any work commenced.

Currently, the Borough Buildings sit empty and are covered in graffiti, presenting what developers describe as a "largely inactive frontage" to the street. The site is adjacent to the former Futurist Cinema, which was granted listed status last spring, adding to the historical significance of the area.

The statement further highlighted that the proposals will "positively contribute to the ongoing renaissance of John Bright Street, the emerging cultural quarter in this part of the city centre and support the visitor economy of the city centre." This proposal comes amid other hotel projects in Birmingham's city centre. Notably, construction is set to begin on the former Pitman Vegetarian Hotel on Corporation Street, a project first proposed in 2019 and expected to be completed by the end of next year.
