Birmingham's Four Restaurants in UK Top 100 for 2026

Birmingham has cemented its status as a major culinary destination, with four of its restaurants earning coveted positions on SquareMeal's prestigious UK Top 100 Restaurants list for 2026. This annual ranking, which highlights the finest dining establishments across the nation, celebrates venues based on their exceptional performance, value, and overall quality.

A Celebration of National Culinary Excellence

The comprehensive list, compiled by SquareMeal's expert panel, showcases a diverse range of dining experiences, from accessible budget-friendly options to extraordinary gastronomic adventures. Each restaurant featured has demonstrated a commitment to excellence, securing its place among Britain's very best.

SquareMeal's representatives acknowledged the challenging landscape facing the UK's restaurant sector, stating: "It's no secret that the UK's restaurant sector is facing formidable challenges. And yet, with each year that passes, hospitality professionals continue to invest everything they have into their projects for the love of what they do." This dedication is clearly reflected in the quality of the establishments honoured.

National Winners and Birmingham's Standout Performance

Topping the national list for 2026 is Bristol's acclaimed restaurant, Wilsons. Operated by Mary Wilson and Jan Ostle, this Michelin-starred venue is currently celebrating its 10th anniversary. Manchester's Skof secured a strong second place, while Restaurant Sat Bains with Rooms in Nottingham claimed third.

However, Birmingham has emerged as a particularly notable performer in this year's rankings. The West Midlands metropolis proudly boasts four entries on the list, which champions Britain's culinary excellence beyond the capital city of London.

Opheem

Leading Birmingham's contingent is Opheem, which claims the impressive number 21 position nationally. Located at 65 Summer Row, this modern and plush eatery is helmed by acclaimed chef Aktar Islam. Opheem holds a Michelin star and serves elevated, modern Indian plates alongside expertly crafted cocktails and wine. The menu evolves with the seasons, being refreshed several times each year, with guests able to choose between five or ten-course tasting experiences.

The Wilderness

Securing 51st place on the national list is The Wilderness, found at 27 Warstone Lane. Under the direction of Alex Claridge, this establishment offers provocative and playful tasting menus that showcase the best seasonal produce. Housed in a converted factory setting, the restaurant provides a distinctive dining experience, famously accompanied by a soundtrack of rock, punk, and heavy metal. It holds Michelin Guide Recommended status and has earned 3 AA Rosettes.

Riverine Rabbit

Positioned at number 87 nationally is Riverine Rabbit, located at 1464 Pershore Road in Stirchley. This venture, which originated in Cape Town, South Africa, is run by Ash and her wife Erin. The restaurant prioritises building direct relationships with farmers and sourcing sustainable produce. Chef Ash secured the Michelin Young Chef of the Year title in 2025, while the restaurant itself earned Michelin Guide recognition with a Bib Gourmand award last year. Riverine Rabbit presents two daily menus that vary each day.

670 Grams

Completing Birmingham's remarkable selection is 670 Grams, which also holds the number 87 position on the list.
