Historic Cornwall Hotel with Royal and Beatles History Sold to Local Group
The Atlantic Hotel, a four-star property in Newquay, Cornwall, which has welcomed notable guests including Queen Victoria and The Beatles, has been sold for an undisclosed sum. This historic hotel, established in 1892, occupies a dramatic clifftop location offering panoramic views of the ocean and the Cornish coastline.
Family Ownership Ends After Four Decades
The hotel had been under the ownership of the Cobley family for the last 40 years before being acquired by the Cornwall Hotel Collection. This local group already manages three other hotels in Cornwall: The Greenbank, The Alverton, and The Falmouth, with the latter being purchased in 2024.
Ben Young, managing director of Cornwall Hotel Collection, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition. "We are delighted to bring The Atlantic Hotel, Newquay, into our family of Cornish hotels," he said. "This landmark property perfectly complements the Cornwall Hotel Collection, strengthening our commitment to exceptional Cornish hospitality, heritage, and guest experience across our portfolio spanning Cornwall."
Young added, "We'd like to thank the previous owners for their stewardship over the past 40 years and we look forward to preserving and maintaining their legacy."
Hotel Features and Facilities
The Atlantic Hotel is set within approximately eight acres of landscaped grounds and private headland. The property includes:
- 57 ensuite bedrooms and suites
- Two apartments
- A large three-bedroom owner’s apartment
- Dining, events, and entertainment facilities
- Leisure and spa amenities, including two swimming pools
With these facilities, the hotel can accommodate up to 1,200 guests, making it a significant venue for events and tourism in the region.
Reactions from Former Owner and Sale Agent
Lorraine Stones, the former owner of The Atlantic Hotel, shared her thoughts on the sale. "After many successful years of trading, our family are so pleased to be able to pass on our iconic hotel to the Cornwall Hotel Collection in the knowledge its legacy will be safe in their hands," she said. "We wish them all the very best for the future."
Stephen Champion, director at property firm Christie & Co, which managed the sale process, commented on the transaction. "We are delighted to confirm the sale of The Atlantic Hotel, one of Cornwall’s most iconic hotels," he stated. "The hotel generated significant buyer interest when it launched to the market, attracting competitive bidding from multiple parties. We are proud to have acted in this landmark transaction and look forward to seeing the next chapter of The Atlantic Hotel under the Cornwall Hotel Collection’s ownership."
The sale marks a new chapter for this historic hotel, which has been a part of Cornwall's tourism landscape for over a century, blending its rich heritage with modern hospitality offerings.
