Birmingham's dining scene is set to welcome a significant new addition as Blacklock, the acclaimed chophouse, prepares to open its doors in the historic St Philip's Place vicarage on Monday, April 20. This marks the first restaurant of its kind in the city, bringing a London-born concept with existing locations in the capital and Manchester to the heart of Birmingham.
A Historic Setting with Modern Flair
Nestled facing Birmingham Cathedral on Cathedral Square, the old vicarage has been transformed into a 100-seat dining space occupying the lower floor, with office space retained above. This is the inaugural restaurant to inhabit this Victorian building, blending historic charm with a casual, sophisticated decor that highlights original features.
What to Expect on the Menu
Blacklock will specialize in hearty, family-style dining, featuring large platters of beef, pork, and lamb chops served on the bone for sharing. The menu also includes vegetarian options and traditional Sunday roasts, catering to a diverse range of tastes. The ambiance is enhanced by a bar crafted from rich, deep wood, evoking a traditional pub feel, and potential theatrical touches like trolley service at tables.
Behind the Scenes Sneak Peek
During a recent visit while staff were in training, glimpses of the interior revealed ongoing final touches, including a grand entrance behind hoarding on Pigeon Park. Interesting historical notes emerged, such as a partially knocked-down wall and rumors of a secret tunnel beneath the floor, adding to the venue's unique character.
Founded by Gordon Ker, Blacklock aims to become a staple in Birmingham's culinary landscape, offering a distinctive dining experience that combines quality meats, vegetarian delights, and a warm, inviting atmosphere in one of the city's most iconic locations.
