Actress Martine McCutcheon has brought a beloved cinematic moment to life, hosting heartwarming reunions at a UK airport in the lead-up to Christmas. The star, best known for her role in the festive classic Love Actually, became part of a special welcoming committee at London's Stansted Airport.
A Scene of Festive Joy
Dressed in a cosy jumper and a maroon jacket, McCutcheon witnessed emotional scenes as travellers were met by friends and family arriving from across the globe. The event, created by Costa Coffee, aimed to spread seasonal cheer and celebrate connections. The actress handed out warm festive drinks to arriving passengers, while a gospel choir performed uplifting carols in the arrivals hall, adding a magical soundtrack to the reunions.
The initiative was backed by new research commissioned by the brand, which surveyed 5,000 adults who celebrate Christmas. The findings revealed that nearly half (47%) believe spending time with loved ones is what most boosts their festive spirit. An overwhelming 86% agreed that the holiday period presents a perfect opportunity to catch up with the people they care about most.
Research Reveals UK's Festive Habits
The study delved deeper into the nation's favourite Christmas rituals for reconnecting. Top activities included winter walks (39%), watching festive films (40%), and meeting in coffee shops (27%). When it comes to must-watch movies, classics like Home Alone (44%), Elf (30%), and Love Actually (24%) form part of unbreakable annual traditions for many.
Travel plays a huge role in these festive gatherings. The research found that almost half (49%) of people journey to see loved ones, covering an average distance of 164 miles. The car is the most popular mode of transport (82%), followed by train (23%) and plane (14%). For 45% of travellers, a festive playlist is the perfect companion, while 39% would want a hot drink for the journey.
Memories Made in the Moment
Speaking about her experience at Stansted, Martine McCutcheon shared her joy at the event. "I've loved spreading a little festive cheer today," she said. "Watching people light up the moment they see someone they've missed is truly magical. There's a real sense of anticipation and gratitude in those first reunions that feels so unique to this time of year. It's been a joy to witness those memories being made right in front of us."
Overall, the research underscored that for more than six in ten people (61%), Christmas is more about connection than celebration. A spokesperson for Costa Coffee added: "The joy of the season is in those first moments of reunion, when the people we've missed most finally come together. Whether it's a shared smile at arrivals or a quiet coffee together, these connections create lasting memories."
