Moxy Marriott Hotel Planned for £25m Hull Development

Revised plans for a £25m Moxy Marriott hotel in Hull city centre have been submitted to Hull City Council by developer Wykeland. The seven-storey hotel will feature 122 bedrooms and is expected to become a vibrant addition to the city's skyline.

Hotel Details and Location

The development is earmarked for a plot adjacent to the recently restored Castle Buildings and the former Earl de Grey pub. The broader Myton Street area, which also encompasses the former Staples store site, has been identified as a prime regeneration opportunity within the council's City Centre Vision. Originally approved in 2019 as a nine-storey, 150-bed hotel, the revised proposals now align with the Moxy brand's specifications.

Developer's Vision

Jonathan Stubbs, Wykeland's development director, expressed pride in the restoration of Castle Buildings and the Earl de Grey, stating that the Moxy hotel would complete this prominent development site. He highlighted the hotel's prime location near the Connexin Live arena, Hull's city centre, marina, Fruit Market, and Old Town, making it ideal for both leisure and business visitors. Stubbs noted that the hotel would bring wider economic benefits and new jobs.

"These revised plans ensure the building reflects the stylish Moxy brand," Stubbs said. "Approval of the planning application will pave the way for the development of a high-quality new hotel that the business community, the tourism and hospitality sectors, and visitors to Hull have been crying out for."

Economic Impact and Market Demand

If planning permission is granted, this would be the first new hotel built in Hull in nearly ten years, since the DoubleTree by Hilton opened on Ferensway in 2017. Commissioned independent market research by Wykeland revealed that city centre hotel capacity reaches full occupancy on 100 nights each year, forcing visitors to seek accommodation outside the city. The new hotel aims to address this demand and boost tourism.
