Pop-Up Restaurant Planned for Vacant Clifton Village Site Empty Since 2021
A long-vacant site in the heart of Clifton Village, Bristol, which has been unused and cordoned off for five years, could soon be revitalized with a temporary pop-up restaurant. This interim proposal comes as the new developers, Speare Developments, prepare to unveil permanent redevelopment plans for the location by the end of the year.
Site History and Previous Plans
The site, located between Clifton Down Avenue and the Clifton Arcade, has a varied history. It was originally a small parade of shops and later hosted an ice rink during several winters in the 2010s. In 2021, the structures were demolished, and since then, it has remained empty despite multiple proposals to build offices, flats, and retail units there.
Over the past five years, the area has been fenced off, becoming an eyesore in the otherwise vibrant Clifton Village. Various development ideas have come and gone, but none have materialized, leaving the site derelict and awaiting a new purpose.
New Vision from Speare Developments
Speare Developments, a fresh developer on the scene, has acquired the site and is now working on a new vision for its future. They have lodged a planning application for a temporary pop-up eatery, which, if approved, is expected to operate for approximately two years.
During this period, Speare Developments will focus on securing planning consent for their long-term proposals. The pop-up restaurant is designed to complement Clifton Village's tapestry of independent traders and bring life back to the area while permanent plans are finalized.
Developer Statements and Community Engagement
A representative for Speare Developments emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "This site has been derelict for too long. A pop-up restaurant presents an exciting opportunity to bring the site to life and improve its appearance whilst we develop permanent plans."
They added, "We want the site to be open and active again, not fenced off and forgotten. There's still a long way to go. As with any brownfield site, there are complex technical constraints that have the potential to affect the viability of a temporary scheme, but we are working through them."
Speare Developments has been actively engaging with local businesses to understand how a new restaurant could work collaboratively with the existing community. The name and operator of the pop-up restaurant are yet to be finalized, but the goal is to create a space that enhances Clifton's strong identity.
Long-Term Redevelopment Plans
Looking ahead, the long-term plans for the site are expected to include a residential-led scheme with a mixture of ground-floor commercial uses. Speare Developments aims to unveil these proposals later this year, with the pop-up restaurant serving as a temporary measure to activate the space in the meantime.
