Madonna has opened up about the real reason her long-awaited biopic was cancelled, revealing a budget dispute with Universal Studios led to the project's collapse. In an interview with Interview Magazine, the 67-year-old music icon detailed the challenges of bringing her life story to the screen.
Budget Dispute with Universal
Madonna explained that she spent two years writing the script and another two years at Universal Studios working on budgeting and casting. However, the project hit a wall when the studio questioned the budget. 'We had a falling out, me and Universal, regarding budget because I needed—I've had an extraordinary life. I've had a huge life, so I needed a big budget,' she said. Despite attempts to reduce costs, the movie 'fell apart'.
Netflix Series Also Fails
After the Universal deal fell through, Netflix approached Madonna about making a series instead. But that too proved difficult. 'That was a whole other long process, because I couldn't use the script I had with Universal,' she said. She spent eight to nine months searching for a showrunner but couldn't find one. 'I was like, “Good thing I have another job because I need to work, I need to create. I need to do what I was put on this earth to do.”'
Return to Music
Madonna put the series on hold to focus on her music. Her upcoming album, 'Confessions II', set for release on July 3, 2026, deals with family trauma and healing. The singer's candid revelations shed light on the difficulties of adapting her extraordinary life for the screen.
