Aldi Shuts All Stores for 62 Hours at Christmas

Discount supermarket giant Aldi has confirmed it will shut every one of its 1,000 UK stores for a total of 62 hours during the Christmas and New Year period in 2025.

Aldi's Festive Closure Schedule

The retailer has released its detailed trading schedule, confirming that stores will operate standard hours until Tuesday, December 23. On Christmas Eve, Wednesday, December 24, all branches will close early at 6pm.

Aldi will then remain completely closed on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day, giving staff a well-deserved break during the festive season.

Stores will reopen from 8am on Saturday, December 27, returning to standard operating hours until New Year's Eve. On Wednesday, December 31, branches will again close early at 6pm.

All stores will then shut for New Year's Day before returning to normal trading from 8am on Friday, January 2.

Budget Concerns and Customer Focus

The announcement comes as Aldi's UK and Ireland chief executive, Giles Hurley, urged the government to avoid policies that could increase costs for retailers in the autumn Budget.

Mr Hurley warned that any additional business costs could "find their way through to the food sector", potentially impacting shoppers already facing "persistent and urgent" inflationary pressures.

He highlighted that Aldi has invested £300 million this year alone in reducing prices to help customers manage cost-of-living challenges.

"I very much see that we can be part of the solution to that challenge," Hurley stated, "which is staying laser-focused on delivering the lowest prices in the market."

The CEO also noted a growing trend of customers "seeking to treat themselves at home, rather than going out", underscoring the importance of maintaining affordable prices during the festive season when families gather for celebrations.
