Aston Villa are reportedly pursuing a move for Celta Vigo midfielder Ilaix Moriba as they look to bolster their midfield options this summer. According to journalist Alan Nixon, Villa are currently assessing the 23-year-old as they prepare for a demanding schedule that includes Champions League football next season.
Moriba's Background and Career Path
Moriba came through the ranks at Barcelona's La Masia academy, where he was highly regarded as a deep-lying midfielder. He was sold to RB Leipzig in 2021 for around £14m, but struggled to establish himself in Germany. After loan spells with Valencia and Getafe, he sealed a permanent move to Celta Vigo, where he has since become a key figure in the heart of their midfield. His playing style has been likened to former Barcelona and Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure.
Potential Transfer Fee and Wages
Celta Vigo are reportedly willing to sell Moriba, with a fee of around £25m believed to be sufficient to secure his services. Wages are not expected to be an issue for Villa, as Moriba's salary demands are manageable. Should he depart, Celta are keen on signing Valencia's André Almeida, whose valuation is close to a fee Valencia would accept. Almeida, who has four seasons at the Mestalla, does not appear to be part of Carlos Corberán's plans and may be open to a move.
Villa's Squad Depth Needs
Villa will need to deepen their squad to cope with the addition of Champions League football to their schedule, alongside domestic competitions. Moriba would add strength in depth to a midfield that will be tested as Villa chase honours at home and abroad. The club's recruitment team is actively assessing targets to ensure they have the quality and depth required for a gruelling season.
