Aston Villa's Bogarde future uncertain amid interest

A decision on Lamare Bogarde’s future at Aston Villa has not yet been made, with a number of clubs interested in the 22-year-old midfielder. Initial talks over a new contract have taken place, but nothing is close to being agreed on fresh terms, leaving a degree of uncertainty surrounding Bogarde this summer.

Villa open to selling Bogarde for the right offer

Aston Villa are not opposed to selling Bogarde if the right offer arrives. Manager Unai Emery rates the Dutch youth international highly and has used him as a useful squad player over the past two seasons, during which he has made 62 appearances in all competitions, including 44 in the last campaign.

Limited league starts despite high potential

However, Bogarde started only 11 league matches last season, though that was still more than double the five he made from the outset in the 2024/25 season. He also started eight Europa League matches last season. While Emery is a strong admirer of his potential, Boubacar Kamara and Amadou Onana currently block his pathway to regular minutes in the holding role in Emery’s side. Even Victor Lindelöf was preferred ahead of Bogarde in the final weeks of the season, deployed in the double pivot, while Youri Tielemans, Ross Barkley and John McGinn also remain midfield options for Emery.

Emery praises Bogarde's versatility

Speaking about Bogarde in March, Emery said: “He has been with us for three and a half years, and we are working with every player. With him - being on loan and then coming back – we were doing a lot of individual sessions with him. His process is working individually, with the group, having experiences, sometimes being on loan at other teams. This season, it’s been a more consistent season for him. He achieved the level again yesterday, he played a fantastic match. His versatility is very important, playing as a midfielder or a centre-back or at right-back.”
