Birmingham City head into the summer transfer window knowing they need a flawless recruitment drive to compete for promotion in the Championship next season. With relegated West Ham, Burnley, and Wolves leading the betting, alongside strong sides like Southampton and Middlesbrough, Blues cannot afford any missteps.
Building on a 10th-Place Finish
A 10th-placed finish last season serves as a foundation for Blues, but owners Knighthead expect at least a play-off berth in 2026/27. The play-offs have been expanded to eighth place, giving two more teams a chance at promotion. Blues have already secured the permanent signing of Jhon Solis after his successful loan from Girona, but more quality arrivals are needed.
Key Targets: Osman and Vitek
Manager Chris Davies has indicated six signings are planned, not including Solis or Ibrahim Osman. Re-signing Osman from Brighton is a priority, but there is no purchase option, and Brighton paid £16 million for him two years ago. Good relations between the clubs may help, but competition from elsewhere could complicate the deal. If Blues can bring Osman back, it would be a significant coup.
In goal, the market offers several proven stoppers, including James Beadle, Illan Meslier (free agent), and Anthony Patterson. However, Radek Vitek, who won Bristol City's Player of the Year award on loan, is the most attractive long-term option. Hull City, Ipswich, and Coventry are reportedly interested, but Blues hope 'The Project' can sway the 22-year-old Czech.
Defensive and Midfield Reinforcements
A left-footed centre-back is needed to allow Christoph Klarer to switch to his natural right side. Phil Neumann's strong end to the season shows he can partner Klarer, but depth is essential. In midfield, Blues require at least one central midfielder to complement Solis, Paik Seung-ho (due for shoulder surgery), and Tomoki Iwata. A creative number 10 is also a priority, as Kanya Fujimoto and Willum Willumsson failed to impress Davies.
Striker Search: Proven Goalscorer Required
Blues' defensive record was among the best in the top 10, but they were the lowest scorers in that group. Kyogo Furuhashi missed numerous chances, and signing a new centre-forward is high on Davies' list. With Marvin Ducksch expected to leave, two strikers may be needed. Championship experience is key—last season's top 13 scorers all had prior league experience. Ross Stewart and Josh Maja are free agents but come with injury and form concerns. Blues need a striker capable of 10-15 goals.
According to Birmingham City reporter Alex Dicken, "If Blues can bring Osman back, it could be a considerable coup for the club." The window closes on September 1, and every item on the shopping list must be ticked off.
