Co-op Confirms Rescue Deal for Southern Co-op Takeover

The Co-op has officially confirmed its takeover of Southern Co-op, securing 200 additional stores and expanding its national footprint to over 2,300 locations across the UK.

On May 21, Southern Co-op members voted overwhelmingly in favor of the rescue deal, giving the Co-op Group the green light to proceed with the merger. Southern Co-op operates more than 300 food stores, funeral homes, and coffee branches, all of which will be integrated into the Co-op brand.

Member Vote and Future Plans

A Southern Co-op spokesperson stated: "Our members have voted to join forces with Co-op Group. Over 16,019 members voted – significantly more than the first vote – demonstrating strong engagement from our members with Southern Co-op’s future."

They added: "This represents an important milestone, giving us a clear mandate to progress our plan to join forces for the benefit of members, colleagues and communities across the UK, while preserving the heritage and legacy of Southern Co-op and all that it stands for."

Employee Protections and Regulatory Review

Once registered, all Southern Co-op assets, liabilities, and employees will transfer to a subsidiary of Co-op Group. Employees will transfer under TUPE regulations, ensuring their existing terms and conditions of employment are protected.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) will review the transaction, but this review will not affect the completion of the merger. During the CMA process, Southern Co-op will operate as a standalone subsidiary of Co-op Group.

The timeline for finalizing the changes has not yet been confirmed. Southern Co-op members can continue using their cards and accessing benefits as usual.

This acquisition marks a significant expansion for the Co-op, strengthening its presence in the UK retail market while honoring Southern Co-op's heritage.
