Co-op Becomes First UK Supermarket to Introduce 'Flexi Checkouts' for All-Hour Service
The Co-operative has launched a groundbreaking initiative, becoming the first supermarket chain in the UK to implement 'flexi checkouts' that ensure all till-points are operational "open all hours." This innovative system is being introduced across 150 stores, including those in Birmingham, with a full rollout scheduled for completion by April.
Dual-Screen Technology Enhances Customer Experience
The new checkouts feature dual screens that can seamlessly switch between cashier-operated and self-service modes, providing enhanced choice and convenience for shoppers. This bespoke technology, developed in-house by Co-op's own teams, allows for a flexible shopping experience tailored to individual preferences.
Successful trials have demonstrated that these checkouts significantly reduce wait times and queues, enabling store colleagues to engage more effectively with customers, assist with inquiries, and maintain a welcoming front-of-shop environment.
Benefits and Future Capabilities
The easy-to-use digital screens clearly display price savings, deals, and promotions, including membership benefits. Importantly, the checkouts retain traditional cashier service functionality for kiosk-only purchases or for shoppers who prefer personal interaction.
Looking ahead, the digital screens have future capabilities, such as supporting parcel collection services and integrating with the growing Co-op Media Network, reinforcing Co-op's position as the UK's largest media owner in the convenience sector.
Commitment to Community and Innovation
David Tyas, Co-op's Head of Operations Support Centre and Innovation, emphasized the company's focus on creating stores that contribute to local life and meet community needs. He stated, "We know that many customers enjoy engaging with our friendly colleagues in store, while for others a quick transaction is key. Our latest checkout technology replaces existing tills with the added flexibility to do both, supporting our commitment to our physical store estate as we continually invest and innovate."
The new checkouts are supplied by Diebold Nixdorf, with the custom software built internally, showcasing Co-op's dedication to technological advancement and customer-centric solutions.
