The Co-op has introduced a significant daily change for shoppers across Birmingham and the UK, launching a new initiative designed to combat food waste and help household budgets.
What is the 'Too Good To Waste' Scheme?
From 6pm every day, Co-op Members can now get 50% off the retailer's entire loose in-store bakery range. This initiative, named 'Too Good To Waste', applies to all unpackaged items that remain unsold at the end of the day.
The discount is active from 6pm until 11:59pm, or until the products sell out, in all Co-op Group food stores. The offer is a direct response to the shopping habits of many members who pick up freshly baked goods later in the evening for an evening treat or to restock their bread at home.
A Win for Shoppers and the Environment
Charlotte Waring, a Co-op buyer, explained the dual purpose behind the scheme. "As a convenience retailer, we know that we're there for those little shops at the end of the day," she said. "Our new Too Good To Waste initiative is a simple way to help our members save while also reducing food waste – so everyone can enjoy delicious bakery treats and do their bit for the planet."
The range of products included in the offer is extensive, featuring:
- All Butter Croissants
- Bakery Cinnamon Swirls
- Classic bread rolls
- Baguettes
Shoppers are encouraged to take advantage of the savings, though the discounts are subject to availability and while stocks last.
Broader Context for The Co-operative Group
This customer-friendly launch comes during a challenging period for The Co-operative Group. The retailer recently reported it slumped to a £75 million underlying pre-tax loss for the 26 weeks to July 5th.
This starkly contrasts with the £3 million profit recorded during the same period a year earlier. The company attributed this downturn primarily to a malicious cyber attack in April, which it said impacted sales by approximately £206 million and resulted in an £80 million blow to earnings.
Despite these financial headwinds, the Co-op continues to roll out initiatives like 'Too Good To Waste', focusing on value for its members and its broader environmental responsibilities.
