Aston Villa are pursuing a move for Flamengo right-back Emerson Royal, a transfer that has sparked debate among supporters on social media. The 27-year-old Brazilian joined Flamengo just a year ago, winning both the league and the Copa Libertadores under former Chelsea defender Filipe Luis. However, his recent career has been marked by inconsistency, leading to questions about whether he can strengthen Villa's squad.
Emerson's Recent Career Path
Emerson's return to Brazil came after a single season at AC Milan, where he joined in the summer of 2024. Milan had initially shown interest in Villa's Matty Cash but instead signed Emerson after Tottenham made him available. His three-year spell at Spurs proved disappointing, especially given his promising performances at Real Betis prior to his £25 million move to the Premier League.
At Tottenham, Emerson made 101 appearances, starting 26 league games in his first season and 20 in 2021/22, while featuring in all eight Champions League fixtures that campaign. However, his game time diminished during the season Villa pipped Spurs to fourth place, prompting a move to Milan. Under Paulo Fonseca, he played regularly in the first half of 2024/25 before a calf injury in January sidelined him for most of the remainder. Sergio Conceicao replaced Fonseca during Emerson's injury, and the defender left after just one season.
Current Situation at Flamengo
Emerson signed a deal with Flamengo until 2028, but the club is reportedly open to selling him after he started only six of their opening 18 league matches in the season that began in late January. A review of his recent history offers little to suggest he would be an ideal signing for a club competing at the top of the Premier League and in the Champions League.
Unai Emery's Revitalisation Track Record
However, Villa's success under Unai Emery has not been driven solely by recruitment but by the culture he and his staff have built at Bodymoor Heath. Emery has a proven record of revitalising players who have fallen out of favour elsewhere. When he won the Europa League with Villarreal in 2021, his squad included Juan Foyth and Étienne Capoue, both cast aside at Tottenham. Giovani Lo Celso also joined Villarreal after their triumph and rediscovered form he failed to show at Spurs.
Emery and sporting director Roberto Olabe have deep knowledge of the Spanish market, and Emerson's strong performances at Betis between 2018 and 2021 suggest a foundation of talent that could be revived. The question is whether Emerson is an upgrade on current right-back Andres Garcia. There is a reasonable argument that he is, and at the very least, he brings valuable experience.
Comparisons to Previous Signings
This may not be a signing that excites fans or sells shirts, but neither did Victor Lindelof when he arrived—and he became Villa's signing of the season and one of the most astute acquisitions in the league last year. According to John Townley, Aston Villa correspondent, "Emery's ability to rebuild confidence and belonging in players is something many professionals rely on."
Emerson Royal could be the next example of Emery's transfer masterstroke, turning a player's career around and strengthening Villa's squad for the challenges ahead.
