IKEA Closing 20 UK Stores for Easter Sunday

IKEA has announced a significant temporary closure affecting the majority of its UK stores, with 20 out of 22 branches set to shut down for a full 24-hour period on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026. This move will impact locations across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, including the popular store near Birmingham in Wednesbury.

Easter Holiday Schedule Details

The Swedish furniture giant has clarified that all stores will resume normal operations on the surrounding days of the Easter weekend. Specifically, IKEA outlets will be open as usual on Good Friday (April 3), Easter Saturday (April 4), and Easter Monday (April 6). The closure is strictly limited to Easter Sunday itself.

In an official statement, IKEA explained: “Over the Easter bank holiday all our stores will be open on Good Friday, Saturday, and Easter Monday. All stores, with the exception of Scotland, will be closed on Easter Sunday.”

Checking Local Store Information

Customers are advised to verify specific opening hours for their nearest store during the holiday period, as slight variations may occur. IKEA recommends visiting their official website or checking local store pages for the most up-to-date information to avoid any inconvenience.

Recent Store Developments and Strategy

This announcement follows recent news about IKEA's ongoing efforts to reinvent its retail spaces. Notably, the company unveiled plans to introduce a new Decathlon store within its Croydon location. The Decathlon unit will occupy 1,188 square metres as a standalone section with its own entrance, situated inside the massive 25,000 square metre IKEA store.

Kim Chin-Sung, Market Manager for IKEA Croydon, commented on the evolving retail landscape: “We first opened IKEA Croydon back in 1992 and since then, the way people shop has changed. At IKEA, we believe that our physical stores have a vital role to play, as a shopping destination and to inspire customers.”

He added that the Decathlon partnership represents a continued investment in reimagining store experiences to benefit both customers and employees.

Monica Cedres from Decathlon echoed this sentiment, stating: “This new home at IKEA Croydon represents a bold step in our mission to help more people across the UK and Ireland become active.”

The Easter Sunday closure underscores IKEA's adaptive approach to holiday scheduling while maintaining its broader strategy of enhancing in-store offerings and collaborations to stay relevant in a changing retail environment.
