IKEA Croydon to Host First UK Decathlon Store in Retail Partnership

IKEA has announced a groundbreaking retail partnership that will see Decathlon open a store within its Croydon branch, marking a UK first for the furniture giant. The move is driven by significant changes in consumer shopping habits and aims to transform IKEA Croydon into a comprehensive lifestyle destination.

Creating a One-Stop Shopping Experience

The Decathlon store will operate as a standalone unit with its own customer entrance, covering 1,188 square metres of retail space inside the 25,000 square metre IKEa store. This innovative setup allows customers to design their dream homes with IKEA products while exploring sporting passions and active lifestyles through Decathlon's offerings.

Kim Chin-Sung, Market Manager for IKEA Croydon, explained: "We first opened IKEA Croydon back in 1992 and since then, the way people shop has changed. At IKEA, we believe that our physical stores have a vital role to play, as a shopping destination and to inspire customers."

Shared Commitment to Accessibility and Quality

Both retailers emphasize providing well-designed, high-quality products at accessible prices to enhance everyday life. Decathlon will offer a curated selection of over 5,000 products across categories including:

  • Hiking and camping
  • Running and fitness
  • Swimming and cycling
  • Various other sports activities

Mónica Cedres, London City Leader for Decathlon UK, stated: "At Decathlon, our purpose is to bring people together through sport to make wellbeing accessible for all. This new home at IKEA Croydon represents a bold step in our mission to help more people across the UK and Ireland become active."

Building on Retail Innovation

This partnership continues IKEA's tradition of retail innovation, following previous adaptations like the 2019 transformation of stores into fulfillment units to meet surging online demand. Those changes enabled:

  1. Expanded Click and Collect services
  2. Improved online order processing efficiency
  3. Reduced environmental footprint of fulfillment operations

The Decathlon collaboration reinforces IKEA's commitment to convenience, innovation, and enhanced in-store experiences, ensuring both customers and employees continue to benefit from these retail spaces.

The spring kick-off for this pioneering retail partnership represents a significant evolution in how major retailers adapt to changing consumer expectations and shopping patterns.
