Lidl has announced a major overhaul of its loyalty scheme, introducing points for the first time since the app launched in the UK in 2020. From Tuesday, Lidl Plus users will earn one point for every £1 spent in store. These points can be redeemed as discount coupons for selected products or as money off a future shop.
Customer Control and Flexibility
Louise Weise, Lidl's chief customer officer, explained the rationale behind the change: "This is a way of bringing more possibilities and more control for customers over how they experience rewards and what they spend those rewards on. That might look very different for different people. Some will save up for an important time of year and some will treat themselves on their next shop. Because one thing we know about our customers is they’re all different, and they all want slightly different things."
Expansion Plans
The loyalty scheme update comes as Lidl continues its aggressive expansion in the UK. The supermarket chain plans to open more than 50 new stores over the next 12 months as part of a £600 million investment in its British infrastructure. This marks the most ambitious standard store opening programme in the UK supermarket sector this year, expected to create nearly 2,000 new jobs across the country.
Upcoming store openings include key sites such as Abbots Langley near Watford, Warrington in Cheshire, and Thornbury in Gloucestershire, all set to open this summer.
CEO Statement
Ryan McDonnell, CEO of Lidl GB, said: "As we grow, we want to positively impact our British communities. We’re not just opening doors, we’re unlocking regional growth. Our expansion translates directly into high-quality jobs and gives British suppliers the certainty they need to invest in the future. Above all, it advances our social purpose of making affordable, healthy food accessible to everyone."
