How the New 'Order Ahead' System Works
The innovative technology, which has now been rolled out nationwide following a successful trial in London, leverages a customer's smartphone location data. This allows restaurant staff to begin preparing an order just before the customer arrives at the branch.
Once an app user completes their payment and is near the chosen restaurant, the kitchen is alerted to start making the food. McDonald's states that this process ensures meals are ready for collection within just 3 to 5 minutes, effectively cutting previous waiting times in half.

A spokesperson for McDonald's UK highlighted that this change is ideal for customers who prioritise speed and convenience. They specifically mentioned the feature would benefit "busy parents always on the go, students juggling deadlines or those just trying to squeeze in a quick lunch."
The chain promises that whether you are taking away or dining in, using 'Order Ahead' helps you jump the queue and ensures your favourites, from a Big Mac to McNuggets, are "hot, fresh, and perfectly timed."
How to Use the Feature in the McDonald's App
To access the new speedy service, customers need to follow a few simple steps within the McDonald's App:
- Download the app and register your details.
- Find your nearest participating restaurant.
- Browse the menu and select your meal.
- Choose your collection method: Front Counter, Drive Thru, or Table Service.
Critical instructions for use:
- For Front Counter collection, ensure you are near the restaurant before clicking 'Pay Now and Start My Order'.
- For Table Service, you must be seated and have entered your correct table number.
- If you select Drive Thru collection, preparation will only begin once you arrive and provide your order number, and you must collect it within two hours of payment.
