The company explained this move in a statement, emphasizing their commitment to value and quality. "The Slices range was updated to ensure we could continue to offer our shoppers great value, while maintaining the quality and full-on flavour our customers expect," a spokesperson said. "The recommended retail price has been reduced from £1.95 to £1.75."
Martin Lewis Weighs In on Shrinkflation Controversy
This development comes shortly after financial expert Martin Lewis shared his perspective on shrinkflation, a practice where companies reduce product sizes while keeping prices stable or slightly lowering them. His comments were prompted by a social media post from a fan highlighting a similar issue with Mokate Gold Premium Latte Caramel packets, which decreased from 10 to 9 sachets.
In response to the post on X, Lewis remarked, "Because it feels duplicitous, like they're trying to pretend it doesn't happen and they hope you won't notice." He added, "Price rises are more transparent."
Consumer Backlash Against Shrinkflation Practices
The discussion around shrinkflation has sparked widespread criticism from consumers, who view it as misleading. Many have voiced their frustrations online, condemning the practice as deceptive.
One individual commented, "This surreptitious practice should be outlawed. It’s price rises by deception and wouldn’t be allowed in any other circumstances." Another added, "Just because they alter one small detail of the packaging without making it obvious you’re now getting less for your money that doesn’t make it fair. What’s worse is they probably increase the cost too."
The debate highlights growing consumer awareness and dissatisfaction with shrinkflation, as companies like Pukka Pies navigate balancing cost pressures with customer expectations. This case underscores the ongoing challenges in the food industry, where transparency and value remain key concerns for shoppers.
