Gary and Sandra, a couple from Redditch, near Birmingham, left viewers of Channel 4's A Place in the Sun astonished after securing a holiday home in Spain for nearly £30,000 under their budget. The pair, married for 16 years when the episode originally aired in September 2024, were searching for a two-bedroom retreat on the Costa Calida with a budget of £90,000.
Property Hunt on Spain's Costa Calida
Presenter Ben Hillman guided the couple through properties in Mazarron, Murcia. The first property that caught their eye was a two-bedroom apartment with a roof terrace. Upon seeing it, Gary exclaimed, "I'm flabbergasted, it looks amazing. The surroundings are fantastic." Ben then revealed the price: £61,500, nearly £30,000 below their budget.
Gary joked, "Steady, what?! Ben, have you ever been kissed on telly?" Ben laughed and replied, "I'm always up for firsts Gary! Bring it in." Sandra admitted she was "very shocked" as she had expected the property to be over budget.
Inside the Perfect Property
As they explored the apartment, Sandra said, "Me likey," while Gary added, "It's everything we've been looking for. It's modern, it's fantastic." Ben noted their shock, and Gary admitted he was speechless. The couple described the property as "perfect."
They put in a "cheeky" offer of £58,000, slightly below the asking price. The seller counteroffered at £59,211, which they quickly accepted. Ben congratulated them, and Sandra said, "I feel really, really happy."
Viewers React to the Bargain
Viewers were thrilled for the couple. One wrote, "They've got a bargain! Well done to them both." Another said, "Well they got it. Cheeky sometimes pays off!" A third commented, "58! Cheeky," while another added, "Glad for them. They were a nice couple." One viewer noted, "Budget of 90k offer of 58k," to which another replied, "32 grand in the back pocket. Bish bash bosh."
