Another significant blow has been dealt to the British high street as the major charity retailer Scope confirms it is shutting two more shops this week. This follows the charity's devastating decision to close a total of 77 locations, a move that has drastically reduced its physical presence across England and Wales.
The Final Closures: Dates and Locations
The two latest shops to face closure are located in Stourbridge and Folkestone. The Stourbridge store served its community for the final time on Thursday, November 20. Its counterpart in Folkestone is scheduled to shut its doors permanently on Saturday, November 22.
This latest development is part of a much larger restructuring effort. Scope, which once operated a network of 138 stores, has already shut more than 50 shops this year alone. The confirmation of these 77 closures marks a profound shift for the disability equality charity's retail operations.
A Heartbreaking Decision for the Charity
Debbie Boylen, Scope’s Head of Retail, expressed profound sadness at having to confirm the closures. In an emotional statement, she emphasised that the charity was "devastated" by the outcome.
"Scope has been campaigning for disability equality for over 70 years," Boylen stated. "Our shops have helped us raise vital income to support our work with disabled people and their families."
She confirmed that the decision was made after a consultation process with the charity's colleagues and volunteers. Boylen paid tribute to the "incredible support from … wonderful and generous communities" and stressed that the charity "never takes the decision to close our stores lightly."

The human cost of these closures was a central point in Boylen's address. She acknowledged that for the workers and volunteers, their roles were "more than just a job."
"We know they feel passionately about playing their part in our work, creating an equal future with disabled people," she added, assuring that Scope would "be doing everything we can to support them." She was clear that the closures were in no way a reflection of their "hard work and dedication."
Despite the significant reduction in its store portfolio, Scope has affirmed its commitment to maintaining a presence on the high street. The remaining shops will continue to act as crucial hubs for engaging with local communities, raising awareness about the charity's mission, and building a movement for change.
