After nearly 50 years of serving the Solihull community, a family-run DIY business has closed its doors for good. Mahoney's DIY, located on Old Lode Lane, has been a staple for building materials, but recent developments have led to its closure. The property received offers starting from £1.25 million at auction, marking the end of an era for the store.
Family Statement and Gratitude
The Mahoney family shared the news on social media, expressing deep gratitude to their staff and customers. “After almost 50 years, Mahoney's in Solihull has closed its doors. It’s been a pleasure serving Solihull and the surrounding areas,” they wrote. They thanked their loyal staff, many of whom are retiring or moving on to new opportunities. The family also remembered those who helped build the business from the start, including Mick and Julia, who took over Martin's, and others who contributed to its growth.
Customer Tributes
Customers flooded the post with heartfelt memories. One wrote: “Such a shame. Remember going there as a young lad with my Dad. My Dad did everything himself DIY and I've followed on with that. He taught me a lot. I don't live in Solihull any longer but feel sorry that it's closing. Good luck to all the staff and family that have provided excellent service for decades!”
Another shared a humorous memory: “My late, great Dad used to get everything from Mahoneys. He sent me there for a ‘glass hammer’ when I was about 15, so about 1985. I was so embarrassed when the staff told me it was a wind up.”
A third customer, who once worked there, said: “My first job. Owe so much to the yard, old colleagues and the Mahoney family for playing a big part of making me the man I am today. Thank you John, Dick, Karen and the late greats Mick and Julie. The best memories.”
Continued Operations
While the Solihull store has closed, the family-run business confirmed that its Streetly site will remain open, continuing to serve the community. The Mahoneys concluded: “All of this would not have been possible without the support of our wonderful customers. Thank you for staying with us through good times and bad. Recessions, austerity, a cost of living crisis and a pandemic. We will always be grateful for your support.”
