Major UK Retailer The Works Shuts Online Store, Directs Customers to Physical Shops

A significant shift is underway in the UK retail landscape as The Works, a prominent high street chain, has made a dramatic change to its digital operations. The budget retailer, known for offering affordable screen-free family activities, has completely shut down its online shopping platform. This move effectively forces customers and shoppers to visit its physical stores across the country instead.

End of an Era for Online Sales

The Works had been selling products through its website since 2012, but online sales have consistently represented only a minor portion of its overall revenue. More than 90 percent of the company's sales continue to come from its network of approximately 500 stores throughout the United Kingdom. With online operations generating what company executives describe as a "relatively small" slice of revenue while actually losing money, The Works' leadership team has decided to take decisive action.

Rather than maintaining a full e-commerce platform, The Works will transform its website into a browse-only platform. This new digital approach will allow customers to view products and seek inspiration online, but all actual purchases must be completed in physical store locations.

Strategic Focus on Brick-and-Mortar Success

CEO Gavin Peck explained the company's reasoning behind this significant strategic shift. "We have reached this decision after a thorough assessment of the options available and are confident that focusing on our successful bricks-and-mortar business is the right step to reduce risk, improve operational clarity and support long-term profitable growth," Peck stated.

He further elaborated on the company's vision for its revised digital presence. "A website that enables customers to browse our products and seek inspiration will help to bring our brand to life and drive customers to our 500 stores. Our mission – to become the favourite destination for affordable, screen-free activities for the whole family has never been more relevant."

Financial Implications and Expansion Plans

The Works, which maintains stores in Birmingham and Solihull among its nationwide locations, has already revised its financial projections upward as a result of this strategic change. The company has increased its earnings guidance from £12.7 million to £15 million for the upcoming financial year. This improved outlook stems from enhancements in the core physical store business and the elimination of losses previously generated by online operations.

The retailer's renewed focus on its high street presence includes ambitious expansion plans. The Works is opening five net new stores during the current financial year, with company executives highlighting the potential to open as many as 100 additional locations in the future. This physical expansion strategy underscores the company's commitment to growing its store-based business model.

Company leadership believes this strategic shift away from online sales will prove financially beneficial in the longer term. The Works anticipates that the move will be cash flow positive over time, as resources previously allocated to maintaining unprofitable e-commerce operations can now be redirected toward strengthening its successful physical retail network.
