Aston Villa Target Toulouse Goalkeeper Guillaume Restes as Martinez Replacement
Villa Eye Restes as Potential Martinez Replacement

Aston Villa have identified Toulouse goalkeeper Guillaume Restes as a potential replacement for Emiliano Martinez, according to The Athletic. The 21-year-old French shot-stopper is considered a 'serious option' should Martinez depart after the World Cup.

Villa Hold Talks with Restes' Representatives

The Athletic reports that Villa have held talks with Restes' representatives and that Toulouse are 'open to selling' for a fee of around £20 million. Restes, who was born in Toulouse, has spent his entire career with the Ligue 1 club, breaking into the first team three years ago. He has made 107 senior appearances for Toulouse, including 33 last season as they finished ninth in the table.

Other Goalkeeping Targets

Villa have also 'sounded out' Japan international Zion Suzuki, who has emerged as a star in North America but is set to return to Parma after last night's elimination. Additionally, Villa have been linked with RC Lens' Robin Risser and Manchester City's James Trafford.

Martinez's Future

Villa are believed to want Martinez to stay and continue as their first choice. The 33-year-old Argentine is under contract until 2029. This is the second summer running Martinez has been linked with a move away; last year Manchester United were reported suitors, while this time it is Juventus.

Succession Planning

Given the uncertainty around Martinez's future, Villa must engage in succession planning, and Restes is clearly on their shortlist. Restes is under contract with Toulouse until 2028 but has also been linked with Lille OSC and Bayern Munich.
