Waitrose Heathrow Airport Retail Partnership Starts in May

Waitrose Announces Pioneering Airport Retail Expansion at Heathrow

Waitrose has confirmed a groundbreaking move into airport travel retail, marking a first for the upmarket supermarket chain in the United Kingdom. The company is partnering with Lagardère Travel Retail, the operator of the RELAY brand, to bring its products to Heathrow Terminal 2, with the initial store set to open in May.

Strategic Partnership with Lagardère Travel Retail

This collaboration will see Waitrose items stocked in four RELAY stores within Heathrow Terminal 2. Three of these outlets will be located airside, while one will be situated landside, all scheduled to be operational by the end of the year. Heathrow Terminal 2 serves approximately 20 million passengers annually, providing a high-traffic location for Waitrose to expand its brand presence.

Charlotte Di Cello, Waitrose Chief Commercial Officer, stated: "Launching at Heathrow represents our inaugural foray into airport retail and a crucial step in broadening our reach by introducing our offerings to more customers in bustling areas. In collaboration with Lagardère Travel Retail and RELAY, our food-to-go selection will debut in four Terminal 2 stores by year-end, complementing our ongoing advancements in travel retail alongside continued investments in our physical shops and online services."

By incorporating one of the UK's most reputable premium food brands into Relay at Heathrow Terminal 2, we are merging quality, convenience, and strong brand awareness to better cater to passengers in a dynamic setting."

He added: "This alliance showcases our capacity to utilize cross-business expertise and collaborate with leading High Street brands to tailor their products to meet the specific demands of travelers."

Expansion Details and Impact

Waitrose, which operates stores in Birmingham and Solihull, is leveraging this partnership to tap into the lucrative airport retail market. The first RELAY store featuring Waitrose products is slated to open in May, with the remaining three following suit throughout the year. This initiative aligns with Waitrose's strategy to grow its brand in high-footfall locations, offering passengers convenient access to its premium food-to-go options.

The move into airport retail represents a significant expansion for Waitrose, building on its existing presence in traditional retail and online platforms. It underscores the company's commitment to innovation and adapting to evolving consumer needs in fast-paced environments like airports.
